Soil Investigation Process


1. Site Investigation

Soil investigation will be done to determine the depth and characteristics of the different subsurface formations, the required foundation depth, the most suitable and economical type of foundations, the allowable bearing capacities and expected settlement for the proposed structures along with the guidelines for earthwork construction specifications, cement type, backfill and other geotechnical recommendations.

In summary, the soil investigation will be made as follows:

1. Drilling the required number of boreholes till the required depth in all types of formations encountered.
2. Engineering analysis will be made and detailed design criteria shall be provided to design the safe and economical foundation for the structures based on the in-situ and laboratory testing and findings.

2. General Quality Control for Materials used for Construction:

Our quality control program is made to control all the materials before, during and after construction. Basically, we conduct suitability tests on all proposed construction materials such as fill/soil materials, concrete and its aggregates, asphalt/bituminous mixtures and its aggregates, trial mixes, blocks and other related materials. Approval for use of the materials depends on testing results. Necessary tests during placement are also conducted. We quality assure in-situ materials for their specified properties.

3. Existing Concrete Structure Investigation

The main objective of investigation is to evaluate the condition of the structure if it is structurally sound and safe, to assess the damage. If any, what causes the damage on the concrete structure and to determine the extent of the damage and the method of repair. Investigation of existing concrete structure on the columns and footings of non-completed bridge will include visual inspection of the structure and physical and chemical analysis of the in-situ materials.

4. Cavity Probing and Grouting

In general, the scope of work shall include the execution, supervision, and recording of the cavity probing and grouting work as required under and around the foundation at the project site.

Cavity probing will be done to determine the presence or absence of cavities in rock formations under proposed structures. The nature and extent of the cavities when present are also determined and measures are adopted to ensure that structures built on top of the sub-surface formations will safe and free from any structural damage due to settlement or collapse of the sub-surface formations.

The purpose of the program is to fill cavities in the rock formations. Accordingly, the mix proposed will contain sand and water without aggregate (sand and small gravel).

Air Quality Testing Process


1. Ambient Air Quality

GECO Company believes that air quality is a fundamental human right. Outdoors or indoors, polluted air has been shown to cause or exacerbate many health affects such as asthma and bronchial conditions, heart disease and other health issues. United State of Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) uses six "criteria pollutants" as indicators of air quality. US EPA established for each of them a maximum concentration above which adverse affects on human health may occur. These six pollutants include Nitrogen Dioxide, Ozone, Carbon Monoxide, Lead, Particulate Matter and Sulfur Dioxide. Our goals in this company to measure minute concentrations of pollutants, many in real time, enabling fast response and remediation measures. Our Mobile lab designed to detect low levels of gases, aerosols and particulate pollution and a range of services to enable the information to be made available to air quality specialists and the decision makers. 2. Water Quality

GECO Company water quality monitoring equipment help us to understand many of the pollutants and allow improvement of water quality. In this company different high technology equipment were used for measuring most water pollutants in situ and in the lab of GECO Company for double check. Water pollution is the contamination of water bodies (e.g. lakes, rivers, oceans, and ground water). Water pollution affects plants and organisms living in these bodies of water and in almost all cases the affects damaging not only to individual species populations, but also to the natural biological communities. Water pollution occurs when pollutants are discharged directly or indirectly into water bodies without adequate treatment to remove harmful compounds. Source of water pollution include two sources, point source and non- point source. Point sources are direct discharges to a single point. Examples include waste water effluent, both municipal and industrial, run-off leachate from waste disposal sites, run-off mines, oil fields and unsewered industrial sites. Non-point sources are diffused across a broad area and their contamination cannot be traced to a single discharge point. Examples include run-off of excess fertilizers, herbicides, and insecticides from agricultural lands and residential areas; oil, grease, and toxic chemicals from urban run-off and energy production, and sediment from improperly managed construction sites, crop and forest lands, and eroding stream banks. Monitoring water quality is based on current water quality standards in the General Presidency of Meteorology and Environment Protection in Saudi Arabia, European and the International standards. GECO Company will measure the water quality parameters including physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of the water inside ground water wells, drinking water station, surface water and any water bodies requested from our customers by using high tech portable equipment as well as laboratory fixed equipment.

3. Soil investigation

Soil pollution, also commonly referred to as soil contamination, is defined as a phenomenon characterized by the loss of structural and biological properties by the soil layers as a result of man-made factors and natural factors, such as wind, soil erosion, acid rains and forest fires. Man-made factors, such as deforestation, excessive and indiscriminate chemical usage, discharge of industrial waste products and more are often considered to be major causes leading to soil pollution. Soil pollution can lead to serious repercussions on both the plant and animal species and thus indirectly humans. Some of the common affects on individuals include development of health disorders, such as cancer, skin disorders and development disorders, depending upon the chemicals present in the soil. From an industrial perspective, soil pollution can lead to various affects, such as reduction in the soil fertility, significantly reducing the crop production, imbalance in the plant and animal species and deposition of silt in the underwater deposits. Testing soil pollution can be very complicated, and there is no way to detect all the possible pollutants. The most common pollutants are petroleum products, heavy metals, industrial solvents, pesticides, herbicides, salts and fertilizers or plant nutrients in such high concentrations that they become toxic. For agricultural producers, the quality of soil plays a critical role in the yield and quality of future crops. Periodic use of agricultural soil testing as a diagnostic tool makes it possible to pinpoint deficiencies in time to remedy issues before significant revenue loss. Agricultural soil testing provides a measure of a soil's fertility, nutrient content, and the presence of potentially harmful organisms.
